Swansea Women’s Asylum Seekers Workshop

In April 2019 Swansea College of Art, UWTSD funded and delivered a five day portfolio development workshop for the Swansea Women’s Asylum seekers group. Designed to introduce practical skills that the women can apply to develop a range of craft-based items with a commercial appeal

The women will continue to develop and disseminate the skills they have leant with their peers and have booked the University’s pop up shop, the Creative Bubble before Christmas to sell handmade items to raise funding for their project.

In addition to supporting the Women’s commercial interests, the art-based workshops introduced the women to the potential of a University degree in order to upskill or re-train once their refugee status has been confirmed. The classes were designed as informal social spaces, a free creche facility made attendance more achievable for many of the group who care for their young families.

One of the group commented:

“I rested so well today – forgot about everything… I was just happy that I took time for myself for a long time Thank you once again in memory of a great time, in a circle of beautiful women with their own talent and charm.”

The project was one of a series of initiatives designed to support UWTSD’s University of Sanctuary application.
