UPTEC’s startup awarded by using zinc in architecture

Rosmaninho+Azevedo – Arquitectos, a startup incubated at UPTEC – Science and Technology Park of University of Porto, won the Jury’s Special Award at VMZINC Archizinc Trophy. The work at the Centro Interpretativo do Vale do Tua got the prize to the Portuguese studio, amongst 120 applications from 18 countries.

The Archizinc Trophy is a biannual international prize directed for all the works where zinc plays an important role. The jury was composed by international renamed architects – chaired by Paul Finch, editor and director of The Architectural Review –, who have evaluated the projects regarding architectural quality, innovation in the application of zinc, functionality and respect for the environment.

“With a substantial economy of means, the zinc skin demonstrates that it is possible to change a building completely without disrupting it, to alter use without betraying the identity of a place.”, the jury affirmed about this project.

The Centro Interpretativo do Vale do Tua (CIVT), opened on February, consists of two old railway warehouses with singular and different identities – one on each side of the Douro. The first one is a wooden centennial building which was restored and it is a place of regional promotion. The other one, fully coated on zinc corrugated, hosts an exhibition that seeks to reveal the natural and historic richness that has been transformed over time by Man’s action.

Susana Rosmaninho, cofounder of the project, said that “this prize is the reward of a process that started in the Summer of 2015 with the contest and project.” “This is our first built work (after several years of collaboration with other studios) and it is very good to have this global recognition on our work.”, add Pedro Azevedo, cofounder of Rosmaninho+Azevedo – Arquitectos.

The Jury’s Special Award is the most important prize on the 8thedition of the VMZINC Archizinc Trophy. Beyond UPTEC’s startup, three more Portuguese architecture studios were distinguished during the ceremony that occurred in Paris.
